I don’t know what’s happened… But something has. He’s changed.
The People’s Theatre in Heaton is opening its brand-new Autumn/Winter Season with a play that has been making waves across the world: Florian Zeller’s internationally acclaimed drama The Son, translated by Christopher Hampton.
At the heart of the story is 17-year-old Nicolas. His parents are divorced, he no longer feels he can live with his mum, and he hopes that moving in with his dad – who has a new family – will offer some stability. But what happens when hope isn’t enough? What happens when the darkness won’t lift?
Zeller’s work is renowned for its raw honesty and emotional punch. Following on from The Father – which became the Academy Award-winning film starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, and which thrilled audiences at the People’s Theatre in 2023 – The Son dives deep into the fractures and fault-lines of family life. It’s a timely, unflinching look at teenage depression, parental responsibility, and the struggle to bridge the gap between generations.
With youth mental health more pressing than ever, this production feels not only relevant but vital.
And that’s just the beginning of what the People’s has in store. Their new season promises something for everyone: Laura Wade’s razor-sharp black comedy Home, I’m Darling; the gloriously silly Dickens spoof Bleak Expectations; Agatha Christie’s twisty murder mystery The Mirror Crack’d; and to round off the year, a festive family treat with the Christmas panto The Wizard of Oz.
