What’s That Honk? Oh, Just Odette Having a Breakdown – Grace Hatchell Delivers the Gossip on “SWAN?”
Alright darlings, fetch your tutus and feather boas because Grace has got a swan-shaped scoop hotter than a stage light on a sweaty fringe day. Canada’s own Lauren Brady has flapped across the pond to bring us a wild, wacky, and wonderfully warped take on Swan Lake – and trust me, this ain’t your nan’s ballet.
Meet SWAN? – a darkly comic, gloriously unhinged one-woman spectacle featuring a chain-smoking, love-wrecked, half-ballerina-half-swan who’s stuck in her own twisted fairytale. Imagine if Black Swan had a dodgy Tinder date, drank three pints of glitter, and then started chain-smoking that’s the vibe. And I am here for it.
Brady – the brains and ballet behind this feathery fiasco – takes a long, hard pirouette at romance, identity, and all those things we’re told we must be to be “worthy” of love. Spoiler alert: this swan’s not waiting for a prince – though you might just get invited to open her box (steady on, she means a literal one… I think).
Combining clown, bouffon, ballet and belting, SWAN? takes a stiletto to the patriarchy and still manages to make you giggle-snort through your gin in a tin. It’s smart, strange, and oddly empowering – like therapy, if your therapist was covered in feathers and had a dark sense of humour.
As Brady herself put it, she wants audiences to “laugh, reflect, and walk away knowing they don’t need to be loved by a romantic partner to feel ‘complete’.” Amen to that, sugarplum.
So if you fancy something bold, bonkers, and full of heart (and possibly a sneaky puff of nicotine), go see SWAN? – the only ballet at the Fringe where the pointe shoes might be filled with existential dread.
Grace, signing off with feathers and flair – see you at the front row. Just don’t wear white. You’ve been warned.
